Kits for the early detection of cancer
Packaging and managed test kits for the Urimon study
For the early detection of cancer, neurological disorders and cardiovascular diseases
Urimon uses a urine test for the early detection of, among other things, cancer, neurological disorders and cardiovascular diseases. What started as a regional study in the Netherlands grew into a nationwide research programme with thousands of participants. That brought a practical challenge: urine cups are relatively large, so how do you ensure a test kit fits easily through a letterbox?
In collaboration with DaklaPack, a practical solution was developed in which complete test kits are sent by post. Participants can easily take the sample at home and return it via the letterbox. From assembling the kits to dispatch, processing and storage of the samples: the entire process is handled by a single partner. This has not only made the process scalable, but also more efficient for Urimon.
From regional study to nationwide participation
Urimon’s study started in 2019 in Twente. Participants collected their urine at home and then handed it in at a local blood collection centre in the region. This worked in the early phase, but it became a limitation as the logistics grew more complex and less scalable. At the same time, the number of registrations increased, creating a need for a more efficient and user-friendly way of collecting and processing.
Bram de Moor - Project Lead at Urimon: “When more and more people outside Twente wanted to take part in the study, we knew we had to organise it differently. We no longer wanted participants to travel, but instead bring the process to them and speed it up.”
The traditional urine cup has been replaced by a flexible and highly convenient collection system, the Ucollect. The combination of a smart kit and a simple returns process ensures that participants can take the sample at home and return it via the letterbox without any extra steps. This significantly lowers the threshold for participants and makes nationwide participation practically feasible.
Solutions for medical kits
A compact test kit for letterbox delivery
DaklaPack worked with Urimon to develop a complete test kit that can be sent and returned by post. The switch from a shipping box to a letterbox envelope marked an important step. Since 2025, the entire process has been carried out using this compact format.
The contents have been carefully put together and tailored to ease of use and reliability. All participants receive an envelope containing a user-friendly sampling kit, tubes for collecting the urine, and clear instructions for taking and returning the sample. Because only a small amount is needed for analysis, the sample can be efficiently divided across multiple tubes. This makes a compact solution possible, without compromising the quality of the research.
From kitting and dispatch to sample storage
In addition to the test kit, DaklaPack manages the entire logistics and operational process. Twice a week, DaklaPack receives a file with new participants, after which the test kits are dispatched the very next day. This ensures a fast turnaround time and a smooth process for both Urimon and the participants.
The returns are sent directly back to DaklaPack and processed there in accordance with fixed protocols. On average, the samples are returned within a week, after which the urine is prepared for storage and analysis. This approach safeguards sample quality and keeps the process fully under control, even at higher volumes.
After processing, the urine samples are stored in DaklaPack’s biobank under controlled conditions at temperatures as low as -80 degrees. This makes it possible to analyse the samples at a later stage, without the need for daily transport. At the same time, digital registration ensures that all data and samples remain fully traceable throughout the process. Kitting, dispatch, returns processing and storage align perfectly.
From study to scalable market launch
The collaboration between Urimon and DaklaPack is characterised by short lines of communication and a practical approach. By outsourcing the process, Urimon can continue to focus on what really matters: research into the development of a disease warning system.
With an eye on the future, both parties are working towards the next phase: from study to market launch. This involves looking at further development of the test kit and the process around it. Think of direct processing and analysis of samples, and how users will be guided through the process in the future.
DaklaPack actively contributes, from further developing the kit to the practical set-up of logistics and processing. This involvement makes it possible to move quickly and prepare the process step by step for scaling up.
Make your research process smarter
The close collaboration with Urimon shows how a well-designed process around sampling, dispatch and storage can make all the difference. By making practical choices and ensuring processes fit together seamlessly, you create room to grow without adding extra pressure on the organisation.
At DaklaPack, we support companies with developing test kits, assembling and dispatching them, and processing and storing the samples under controlled conditions.
